Work on the Gull Wing construction continues to progress.

The northern side of the southern roundabout is currently nearing completion, which will allow us to reopen Waveney Drive in both directions from the week beginning August 14.

This will help mitigate effects on traffic in Lowestoft from other unconnected roadworks, including allowing installation of a safety scheme near a primary school.

Waveney Drive will then re-close from early September until the end of the year to allow completion of the roundabout and associated works.

This will ensure work can continue in a safe manner, without works vehicles crossing a public carriageway and avoiding having to reduce lane width on the northern end of Tom Crisp Way which could cause congestion.

Work on the construction of the bridge is unaffected by the roadworks.

Simon Bretherton, Suffolk County Council Project Director, said that during this work there will be full pedestrian and cycle access through the road closure which would be clearly signposted.

“Inevitably this closure will result in some disruption for residents, businesses and motorists for which we apologise, and we will be working to ensure the road is re-opened as soon as possible,” he said.

“We are very grateful to local people for their continued patience and tolerance.

“It has to be remembered these works support a new bridge that will bring huge benefits to Lowestoft and the wider area for many years to come, thanks to reduced traffic congestion and regeneration of the area from the investment it will attract.”

Leading building and civil engineering contractor Farrans are constructing the bridge for Suffolk County Council, which will be a much-needed third crossing over the town’s Lake Lothing.
